By Caroline Ameh

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Oleksii Reznikov, announced his resignation on Monday, revealing that he had submitted a formal letter of resignation to the Chairman of Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media (formerly Twitter), Mr. Reznikov expressed his deep gratitude for the honor of serving the Ukrainian people and working tirelessly for the Ukrainian army during the challenging 22 months that marked a significant chapter in Ukraine’s modern history.

Within his resignation letter, Mr. Reznikov, who had assumed the role of Defense Minister in November 2021, confidently asserted that all the vital objectives and missions of his tenure had been successfully achieved.

Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had already signaled his intention to dismiss Mr. Reznikov. President Zelensky plans to seek parliamentary confirmation this week for Rustem Umerov, the current head of Ukraine’s central privatization fund, as the successor to the defense portfolio.

President Zelensky emphasized his belief that the Ministry of Defense requires fresh perspectives and new modes of engagement, both with the military and the broader society.
