Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, unveiled a new strategic framework termed the 4D foreign policy doctrine. This policy, anchored on Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora, aims to chart Nigeria’s path to development and global relevance.
During the inauguration on Tuesday in Abuja, Ambassador Tuggar highlighted the ceremony’s significance in showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and unity amidst diversity. He stressed the vital role this doctrine plays in shaping the nation’s future, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s foreign policy concept.
Democracy took center stage in the policy, seen as a fundamental governance structure guaranteeing rights and the rule of law. Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the need for strengthening democratic institutions to serve the populace’s collective interests, reflecting President Tinubu’s commitment to bolstering democracy.
Addressing obstacles hindering democracy’s growth, the Minister advocated leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) to enhance trade and economic cooperation. He emphasized the significance of transparent global governance and health initiatives for sustainable socio-economic development.
Nigeria’s demographic strength, with over 200 million people, emerged as a focal point in the doctrine. Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the country’s potential for development and expressed intentions to use foreign policy to spotlight the talents and skills of the youthful population both within Nigeria and abroad.
Recognizing the crucial role of Nigerians in the diaspora, Ambassador Tuggar acknowledged their contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth through remittances. He underscored President Tinubu’s belief in harnessing the diaspora’s expertise for Nigeria’s progress and investment prospects.
In conclusion, Nigeria’s 4D foreign policy doctrine marks a pivotal shift in strategy, aiming to leverage democracy, development, demography, and the diaspora for the nation’s advancement on the global stage.
