The Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made a distinctive call to voters on Saturday, advocating for a personalized approach by encouraging them to simply inscribe her name, “Giorgia,” on their ballots.
While the elections ostensibly aim to shape the composition of the European Parliament, Meloni’s strategic move underscores her ambition to solidify her influence within Italian politics. Notably, she has chosen to place her name at the forefront of her party’s ballot, signaling her desire to maintain a firm grip on national affairs, despite having no intentions of assuming a seat in the European Parliament herself.
Giorgia Meloni, at the helm of the far-right Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, has seen her popularity surge since assuming the premiership in 2022. This ascent has been fueled by a fragmented opposition, dominated by centrist and left-wing factions, and the gradual decline of her coalition partner, Matteo Salvini’s once-dominant populist League party.
