Sri Lanka and the European Union have maintained diplomatic relations since 1962, with a Cooperation Agreement signed in 1995 to strengthen bilateral ties.

The EU is one of Sri Lanka’s major trading partners, with bilateral trade agreements in place to promote economic cooperation. In 2022, the EU imported $3.31 billion worth of goods from Sri Lanka and exported $1.06 billion worth of goods to the country.

The EU and Sri Lanka can explore new areas of cooperation, such as trade agreements, investment, and security cooperation. A potential free trade agreement between the two could further strengthen their economic ties
