The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Commission, in collaboration with the European Union, EU, Experts from France, and other implementing partners, have met over the need to strengthen cooperation between the ECOWAS, and East African Community, (EAC), regions, in designing and implementing equitable, inclusive, gender-responsive, green, and digital education policies, with a strong focus on basic education.
According to a statement by the ECOWAS Commission, the two-day meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria from 8th to 9th September, 2025, under the Africa-Europe Partnership to Exchange on Education Reforms, (PEERs), programme had discussions that centred on higher education priorities, including the ECOWAS Nnamdi Azikiwe Academic Mobility Scheme, (ENAAMS), Technical and Vocational Education and Training, (TVET), and the Harmonisation of Education Systems, while exploring strategies to build a foundation for basic education reforms.

Meanwhile, participants at the meeting emphasised the importance of joint ownership of the PEERs project, with ECOWAS as the regional coordinator, and Expertise France conducting a comprehensive situation analysis.
The Stakeholders also considered presenting the project at the 2025 ADEA Triennial, as the meeting ended with a strong commitment to transformative education across the region.
