On March 3, 2026, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai met with Dr. Mariam Masha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Regional Development Programmes.

Ambassador Yu Dunhai stated that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria. Over the past 55 years, China and Nigeria have always respected each other and treated each other as equals, writing a splendid chapter of common development together. Last month, President Xi Jinping solemnly announced in his congratulatory message to the 39th African Union Summit that China will implement a zero-tariff initiative covering all tariff lines for 53 African countries having diplomatic ties with China.

This major measure will inject new momentum and bring new opportunities to Africa’s development. China is willing to work with Nigeria to promote the early and effective implementation of the zero-tariff measure, deepen exchanges and mutual learning on regional development experiences, and jointly advance the modernization process. Dr. Masha spoke highly of the development achievements of Chinese Path to Modernization, expressed gratitude for China’s long-term assistance and support to Nigeria’s economic and social development, and stated that Nigeria is willing to draw on China’s successful experience in regional development, deepen practical cooperation with China in various fields, and continuously promote the Nigeria-China relations.
