Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has urged girls to overcome societal barriers, pursue their ambitions and prepare for leadership, stressing that their contributions are vital to national and global development.
She made the call in a message commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child, celebrating the strength, brilliance and potential of girls in Nigeria and across the world.
“To every girl with a dream in her heart: your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your possibilities are limitless,” the minister said.
Drawing from her experience as a woman, Odumegwu-Ojukwu acknowledged that the path to success could be challenging but urged girls not to allow their circumstances or societal expectations to limit their aspirations.
She encouraged them to embrace education, pursue their goals with determination and develop the confidence to assume leadership roles.
“Learn. Dream. Dare. Lead,” she declared, urging girls to take their place with confidence and never apologise for aspiring to greatness.
The minister’s message highlights the importance of creating opportunities for girls to develop their talents, exercise their rights and participate meaningfully in decision-making.
The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, raises awareness of the challenges girls face and promotes efforts to advance their rights, education and empowerment.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s message reinforces the need to remove barriers that hinder girls’ progress and ensure they have the support and opportunities to realise their potential.
She urged girls to believe in their abilities, speak up confidently and contribute to shaping a future in which their talents and aspirations can thrive.
