UN,US,FINLAND MISSIONS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD.

On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
October 11, every year has been set aside for celebrating the girl child by the United Nations since 2011. This year’s theme is “Our Time Is Now-Our Rights, Our Future”.
In his remarks about this year’s anniversary, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Gutteres said “Now more than ever, we must renew our commitment to work together so that girls enjoy and exercise their rights and can play a full and equal part in their communities and societies. Investing in girls is investing in our common future.”
The United States Mission in Nigeria in its commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls worldwide and in commemoration of this year’s anniversary hosted 100 schoolgirls from across Nigeria highlighting the importance of girls’ empowerment through increased access to education.
The Finish Embassy in Nigeria also celebrated the day using their official Twitter handle with pictures of girls and officials of the Embassy stating their commitment to promoting the access to high quality and basic education of indigent girls in Nigeria.
