The Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, has urged participants of the 26th Regular Course of the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy (NFSA) to uphold discipline, professionalism, and patriotism as they prepare for diplomatic careers.

The Minister made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the official opening ceremony of the 26th Regular Course at the Nigeria Foreign Service Academy. She emphasized that the training program is not just an academic exercise but a crucial stepping stone to their future roles in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Ojukwu highlighted that the participants’ admission into the academy is a testament to their potential, discipline, and dedication. She reminded them that they would serve as Nigeria’s representatives, shaping the country’s global image.

“Your admission into this prestigious training program is a testament to your potential, discipline, and dedication. You are now on the path to becoming Nigeria’s diplomats—one of the critical mirrors through which the world will see and assess our great nation. This is both an honour and a great responsibility,” she stated.

She urged the trainees to always conduct themselves with dignity, professionalism, and a strong sense of duty, emphasizing that their comportment, attitude, and dressing must reflect the excellence and decorum expected in diplomatic circles.

“A diplomat is not only a nation’s representative but also a custodian of its values, traditions, and aspirations. Therefore, I urge you always to embody the principles of discipline, respect, and integrity,” she added.

The Minister further stressed that the training is designed to equip them with the necessary skills to navigate the complex world of diplomacy. She encouraged them to approach every lesson, discussion, and assignment with an open mind and a commitment to excellence.

“Take full advantage of the knowledge and expertise that your instructors will impart. Learn from one another, build lasting relationships, and develop the skills that will make you exceptional representatives of Nigeria on the global stage,” she said.

She also emphasized that success in the program requires total commitment, stating that their ability to complete the course successfully, pass examinations, and demonstrate readiness for diplomatic responsibilities would determine their future in the Ministry.

“To excel, you must also cultivate qualities beyond academic brilliance. Diplomacy demands patience, tact, cultural sensitivity, and excellent communication skills. You will be called upon to navigate complex negotiations, mediate disputes, and promote Nigeria’s interests in diverse international settings. This requires knowledge, wisdom, adaptability, and a keen sense of global affairs. Develop these qualities now, for they will serve you well throughout your career,” she advised.

Ambassador Ojukwu commended the Director and the entire Foreign Service Academy management team for their dedication to grooming Nigeria’s future diplomats. She encouraged the course participants to remain focused and disciplined, assuring them that while the journey ahead may be challenging, it is also filled with opportunities for growth and achievement.

In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, urged participants to take full advantage of the course to sharpen their diplomatic skills and character.

He emphasized that beyond technical knowledge, patriotism, loyalty, and devotion to service must be deeply embedded in their conduct.

“The idea of patriotism, loyalty, and devotion to serve must be deeply embedded in your character and conduct,” Ambassador Ahmed stated.

The 26th Regular Course of the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy is aimed at preparing future diplomats for the demanding responsibilities of international representation, negotiation, and global engagement.
