By Caroline Ameh

In response to recent unrest in several UK cities, Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has reassured the Nigerian diaspora in the UK of their safety and security. The High Commissioner conveyed this assurance during a meeting with Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), held in Abuja.

Dr. Montgomery reported that 12 towns in the UK have been affected by the disorder. He emphasized that the UK government is actively working to restore calm and normalcy in these areas. To address the situation, the government has established 60 special courts, staffed by UK police and legal operatives, to handle the criminal disturbances. Over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest, and Dr. Montgomery expressed confidence that the situation will be resolved swiftly.

The High Commissioner highlighted that the UK remains a welcoming environment for people from various countries and backgrounds, committed to justice and fairness. He assured that the UK will take firm action against those spreading hatred and disinformation online.

Dr. Montgomery also noted that approximately 430,000 visa applications from Nigerians have been approved this year. He advised applicants to apply directly and to be wary of agents.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that, to date, no Nigerian has been reported harmed by the recent disorder. She emphasized that NIDCOM remains in close contact with the Nigerian High Commission in London, diaspora groups, and student organizations, all of which have reported no casualties.

She praised the UK government for its prompt action, particularly the arrests made so far, and reminded Nigerians of the travel advisory issued by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians in the UK to remain vigilant and cautious.

The meeting was attended by British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever, First Secretary Political Natalie Palmer, and staff members of NIDCOM.
