By Caroline Ameh

Pakistan was rocked by two devastating bomb attacks on Wednesday, just hours before the scheduled elections, resulting in the loss of at least 22 lives and intensifying concerns about the security situation surrounding the electoral process.

The initial explosion occurred near the campaign office of an independent candidate in the Pishin district, situated approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Quetta. Reports from authorities indicated that 12 individuals lost their lives in the blast, while 25 others sustained injuries.

In a separate incident, a second bomb detonated near the election office of a candidate representing the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) party in Killa Saifullah city, located around 120 kilometers (75 miles) away. Officials confirmed that the attack resulted in the deaths of 10 people and left 12 others wounded.

According to sources, the second explosion targeted the bustling main bazaar area of the city, where the JUI-F election office was situated.

These tragic events unfolded amidst unprecedented security measures, with over half a million security personnel deployed across the country to ensure the safety of voters and polling stations. Despite these efforts, concerns over violence and allegations of electoral irregularities have cast a shadow over the electoral process.

The lead-up to the elections has been marked by heightened tensions, with accusations of pre-poll rigging and reports of targeted attacks on candidates. In recent days, several candidates have been killed or targeted in attacks, exacerbating fears of widespread unrest.

As campaigning concluded on Tuesday night, attention now turns to Thursday’s voting, which is expected to proceed as planned despite the challenges and security threats. Millions of eligible voters are poised to participate in shaping the country’s political landscape, underscoring the significance of these elections amidst the backdrop of uncertainty and volatility.
