The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has deployed an Election Observation Mission consisting of forty (40) observers to Togo. The mission’s primary objective is to monitor the legislative and regional elections scheduled for April 29, 2024.
This deployment aligns with Article 12 of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, showcasing the regional organization’s commitment to supporting its Member States in conducting transparent and credible elections. Leading this mission is the former Vice-President of The Gambia, Mrs. Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang.
The delegation comprises Ambassadors from Member States accredited to ECOWAS, representatives from the ECOWAS Court of Justice and Parliament, Civil Society Organizations, media professionals, and election observation specialists from the West African region, this observer team reflects a diverse and comprehensive approach to monitoring the electoral process.
The decision to deploy this observation mission stems from the recommendations of a pre-election fact-finding mission that assessed the preparatory phases of the elections in Togo from April 15 to 20, 2024.
During their tenure in Togo, the observation mission will engage in consultations with key stakeholders involved in the electoral process and meticulously monitor the voting process leading up to April 29, 2024
