The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has opened a consultative workshop in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on competition in air transport, consumer protection and dispute resolution mechanisms in the region’s aviation sector.

According to a statement by the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja, the meeting organised by ECOWAS aims to formulate practical recommendations to strengthen governance and improve the efficiency and competitiveness of air transport across West Africa.

Speaking at the opening, the ECOWAS Commission Director of Transport, Mr. Chris Appiah, described the workshop as an important milestone in the collective efforts of Member States to reform and enhance the regional air transport industry.

Delivering the remarks on behalf of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, Mr Appiah also recalled the commitment of Member States under Article 32 of the revised ECOWAS Treaty of 1993 to develop a coherent policy framework that promotes regional integration in transport and communications.
