Tragedy struck during the funeral procession of Malawi’s late Vice-President Saulos Chilima when a vehicle in the convoy collided with mourners, resulting in the deaths of four people, including a pregnant woman, according to Malawian police reports. The incident occurred on Sunday night amidst escalating tensions between locals, law enforcement, and soldiers escorting Chilima’s casket from Lilongwe to his hometown of Ntcheu for burial.

Thousands of mourners had lined the streets to pay their respects as the convoy passed through areas near Chilima’s residence. However, unrest broke out as some mourners reportedly threw stones at government vehicles and officials, prompting a chaotic scene. In the ensuing confusion, one vehicle veered off the road, tragically striking a group of mourners and causing fatalities and injuries.

Felix Njawala, spokesperson for Chilima’s UTM party, acknowledged the tense atmosphere along the route, noting an incident in Dedza where mourners blocked the road, demanding to view the late Vice-President’s coffin.

“We condemn all forms of violence,” emphasized UTM secretary general Patricia Kaliati, urging supporters to honor Chilima’s commitment to peace throughout his political career.

Saulos Chilima, aged 51, had tragically lost his life a week earlier in a plane crash that also claimed eight other lives. The crash occurred in a forested area amid adverse weather conditions in northern Malawi. His passing has deeply resonated across the nation, evident from the massive turnout at a solemn funeral service held at the national stadium on Sunday.

Known for his strong connection with the youth and viewed as a transformative figure in Malawian politics, Chilima’s untimely death has sparked criticisms regarding the circumstances leading to the plane crash. President Lazarus Chakwera, who encountered mixed reactions during his eulogy at the funeral service, has pledged a comprehensive investigation into the crash.

Security measures have been significantly heightened across Ntcheu district as preparations continue for Chilima’s final resting place, aiming to ensure a peaceful and dignified farewell to the late Vice-President.
