The Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has condemned the mistreatment of Super Eagles’ Victor Osimhen and emphatically called for the dignified treatment of Nigerian sportsmen and women residing abroad.

This statement comes in response to a viral video mocking Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen for missing a penalty kick during a match against Bologna.

In an official statement released by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tuggar emphasized that the treatment of Nigerian athletes in the diaspora aligns with the Ministry’s 4Ds Strategy, also known as the Tinubu doctrine. This strategy focuses on Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography as key components of Nigeria’s foreign affairs objectives.

The Diaspora aspect of this strategy places paramount importance on the life and dignity of every Nigerian living abroad, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Ambassador Tuggar cited Article 1 of the declaration, which states that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

Addressing the incident involving Victor Osimhen, the Minister noted, “Napoli did not act in the spirit of brotherhood by mocking their star player, Victor Osimhen, who played a pivotal role in the team’s Serie A Championship victory last season.”

Ambassador Tuggar pledged that both the Nigerian government and Embassy will vigilantly monitor the treatment of Nigerian sportsmen and women worldwide, as well as all citizens of the Nigerian diaspora. They stand ready to take swift action in seeking redress for any mistreatment.
