The Nigerian Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, has unveiled plans for a pioneering initiative aimed at engaging Nigerians living abroad in a housing project. The initiative, titled the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme, is set to launch in February 2024 across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.

Expressing the Ministry’s commitment to supporting Diaspora initiatives, Arch. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa emphasized the importance of partnerships in the housing and urban development sector. This move comes in collaboration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission for National Development.

“At the recently concluded 6th Edition of the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), I launched the FMBN Diaspora Mortgage Scheme, developed in conjunction with NIDCOM during my tenure as MD of FMBN,” noted Arch. Ahmed Musa.

The overarching goal of the scheme, as highlighted in a statement released by the Commission, is to ensure that Nigerians living abroad have access to decent housing in Nigeria, offering them a place to call home.

Furthermore, Arch. Dangiwa highlighted the Federal Housing Authority’s commitment to fulfilling its tripartite mandate by spearheading the Diaspora City Project in collaboration with NIDCOM, FHA, and FCT. Situated on a vast expanse of over 675 hectares of land in Maitama 2, this project aims to cater to the housing needs of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, shed light on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 4D agenda: Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora. She announced that the Minister would officially unveil the details of the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme in the UK, USA, and Canada.

Commending the Minister’s dedication and active involvement in the launch of the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme during the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa expressed the enthusiasm of Nigerians in Diaspora for both the mortgage scheme and the forthcoming Diaspora smart city in Kabusa, Maitama 2.

It’s estimated that approximately 20 million Nigerians reside in the Diaspora, collectively remitting over $24 billion annually, significantly contributing to the Nigerian economy.
