Flick Says He will Not Quit If Germany Crashes Out of World Cup.

Germany Coach Hansi Flick is not thinking of resigning even if his team is eliminated in the World Cup group stage.

Having lost 2-1 to Japan and drawn 1-1 with Spain, Germany go into the Group E decider with Costa Rica on Thursday needing a win while also hoping Japan lose to Spain.

“I can confirm that, from my side – I don’t know what else is coming,” Flick told a news conference on Wednesday when asked if he would want to stay on whatever happens.

“I have a contract until 2024, I’m looking forward to the home European Championship, but that’s a long time away.”

He expects the Central Americans to be “very defensive,” with a draw possibly being enough for Costa Rica to advance to the last 16.

“Of course, we would like to win the game early on so we put some pressure on (Japan) in the other game, but we know it will be difficult against a very defensive team,” Flick said.

Flick would not give away his team but gave Leroy Sané hope that he will make his first start of the World Cup for his 50th cap.

He missed the defeat by Japan with a knee problem and came off the bench to great effect in the draw with Spain.

“He has no problems. He is also, like so many others, a good option for this game,” Flick said.

The match will make history as the first men’s World Cup game with a female referee.

Flick said he “100%” trusts Frenchwoman Stéphanie Frappart to excel.

“She has deserved it because of her performances,” he said. “We are looking forward to the game and I hope she is too.”

Germany were fined for not sending a player to the obligatory pre-match news conference before the Spain game. This time they sent defender Lukas Klostermann, who is unlikely to start against Costa Rica.

On Frappart, he said: “For me it is the most normal thing in the world. I have never really noticed whether it was a man or a woman blowing the whistle.”
