German Sports Minister Signs Agreement To Bid For 2040 Olympics.

The German government has officially paved the way for a German Olympic bid for 2040.

In Paris at the 2024 Games, Interior and Sports Minister Nancy Faeser signed a basic agreement with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) as well the federal states and cities interested in a bid.

Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Hamburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region want to host the Games but a joint effort with two bidders is likely. The DOSB was attracted to a 2036 bid, 100 years after the Nazi Games in Berlin, but 2040 now looks more probable.

“We want another home game for our German athletes. The government stands united behind a new German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We want to utilize the great opportunities that the Olympic Games offer for our cohesion, for our economy and for sport,” Faeser said with an apparent nod at the recent men’s 2024 European football Championship held in Germany.

DOSB president Thomas Weikert says 2040 would be “a good option” as it is 50 years after German reunification. Faeser emphasised that this would be “a strong symbol” behind a bid.
