Ghana Marks The 2026 Commonwealth Day With Flag-raising Ceremony.

Ghana joined the global community of the Commonwealth of Nations to commemorate the 2026 Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the Forecourt of the State House on Monday, 9th March, 2026. This year’s event held under the theme: “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” called for deeper collaboration, innovation and solidarity among Member States to address global challenges and expand opportunities for economic growth, sustainable development and youth empowerment.

In his address, the Minister for the Interior, Honourable Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP) reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ideals and values of the Commonwealth which includes democracy, peace, good governance, human rights and multilateral cooperation. He highlighted Ghana’s contribution to international peace and security and reaffirmed the country’s believe in multilateralism and equitable development. He added that cooperation among nations remains essential in addressing contemporary global challenges. He stated that the priority areas for Ghana within the Commonwealth framework were climate resilience, digital transformation and youth empowerment and called for a collective action among Member States to build a prosperous and inclusive global community.

Delivering a statement on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty King Charles III, the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, His Excellency Christian Rogg noted that Member States have the responsibility to safeguard the planet, support young people and work together to build a more sustainable and prosperous future. He also underscored the importance of cooperation in addressing pressing global issues, particularly climate change and sustainable development, while harnessing the potential of Commonwealth’s youthful population.

On his part, the Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council in Ghana, Dr. John Obeng Apea emphasised that the Commonwealth remains a unique and voluntary partnership of nations bound not by geography but by a shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. He also highlighted the importance of trust, cooperation and innovation in strengthening economic partnerships and advancing inclusive development across Member States.

A photo exhibition was mounted to showcase Ghana’s engagement within the Commonwealth. The event brought together Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Senior Government Officials, representatives of International Organisations, Religious Leaders, Traditional Leaders, Security Service Personnels, among others.
