Haiti Declares State of Emergency Following Double Jailbreak.
By Caroline Ameh
Haiti’s government has announced a state of emergency and imposed a night-time curfew after a surge of violence erupted over the weekend. The escalation unfolded when armed gang members launched attacks on the nation’s two largest prisons, resulting in the escape of thousands of inmates.
The declaration of a 72-hour state of emergency was swiftly enacted as authorities mobilized efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped convicts, including individuals accused of murder, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
Acting Prime Minister Patrick Boivert, who also serves as finance minister, issued a statement instructing law enforcement to utilize all legal means necessary to enforce the curfew and apprehend offenders.
These incidents unfolded while Prime Minister Ariel Henry was abroad, engaged in efforts to garner support for a United Nations-backed security initiative aimed at stabilizing the nation.
