The Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed satisfaction over the justice served in the case of Filippo Ferlazzo, an Italian man who brutally killed a Nigerian citizen in Italy. The incident, which shocked the Nigerian community and garnered widespread attention, culminated in a 24-year jail sentence for the perpetrator on Wednesday.

The harrowing incident happened on July 29, 2022, in a bustling street of Civitanova Marche, Italy.

Alika Ogorchukwu, a 39-year-old Nigerian man who relied on crutches to walk, was assaulted in broad daylight while hawking.
Ferlazzo used Ogorchukwu’s crutches as weapons to beat him to death in front of numerous onlookers who, tragically, did not intervene with several bystanders recording the horrific incident with their smartphones.

The Nigerian Mission in Rome played a pivotal role in ensuring that justice was served in this case. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa praised the mission’s dedication not only in this instance but also in other cases involving Nigerian nationals. She underscored the importance of accountability and stressed that actions must have consequences.

While the verdict brings a measure of closure to the tragic loss of Alika Ogorchukwu, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for Nigerians in the Diaspora to remain law-abiding and to maintain their connection to their homeland. Dabiri-Erewa encouraged Nigerians abroad to excel in their pursuits and find ways to give back to their home country.
