Kenya Delays School Re-opening As Flood Death Toll Rises.

The Kenyan government has postponed the re-opening of schools by one week as a result of floods that have killed more than 80 persons so far.

Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. Resumption of schools have been affected by the floods. According to Machogu, “the devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that, it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place” the Minister added.

All schools to re-open for the second term on 29th April, will now open on 6 May.

As at Saturday, the death toll had risen to 83, after 13 more bodies were recovered in different parts of the country.

Kenya and other East African countries have been affected by severe down pours in recent weeks.

Nearly 100,000 persons have been displaced in Burundi, while at least 150 persons have died in Tanzania.
