Nigeria Backs G20’s Inclusive Growth Agenda.

By Caroline Ameh

Nigeria has expressed strong support for the G20’s commitment to inclusive growth, calling for urgent global reforms to foster economic equity, peace, and security.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, made this known during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa. His remarks were conveyed in a statement released on Thursday by his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir.

Congratulating South Africa on assuming the G20 presidency, Tuggar pledged Nigeria’s full backing for its priorities, including disaster resilience, debt sustainability, and a just energy transition.

He urged the G20 to focus on harnessing critical minerals to drive inclusive growth while addressing global conflicts and humanitarian crises. Tuggar also advocated for strengthened mechanisms for peaceful conflict resolution, enhanced humanitarian aid, and increased support for African-led peace initiatives.

According to Tuggar, combating terrorism requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond security measures to include socio-economic development. He highlighted the need for investments in education, healthcare, and job creation to tackle the root causes of terrorism.

The minister reiterated Nigeria’s call for urgent reforms in multilateral institutions, arguing that the current global system does not adequately represent the realities of developing nations. He also raised concerns about tax justice, urging the G20 to support President Bola Tinubu’s proposals to curb capital flight and tax evasion by multinational corporations.

Tuggar condemned the issue of illicit financial flows (IFFs), noting that Africa loses billions of dollars annually due to corruption and illegal trade practices. He called for greater transparency in global financial transactions, stricter regulations on tax havens, and enhanced international cooperation to recover stolen assets.

He emphasized that solidarity, equity, and sustainability should guide the G20’s actions, urging world leaders to work towards building a fairer and more inclusive global community.

“Nigeria is committed to collaborating with international partners to ensure no nation is left behind,” Tuggar said, reaffirming the country’s dedication to global economic equity and sustainable development.
