The Federal Republic of Nigeria has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Republic of Benin, the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and The Gambia following their election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). This milestone comes after their successful selection by the United Nations General Assembly on October 9, 2024.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria highlighted the vital role of the UN Human Rights Council in safeguarding and promoting human rights across the globe, particularly in today’s complex and challenging times. The newly elected member states are set to begin their tenure on the Council from January 2025, serving through 2027.

Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed the statement, reaffirming Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to human rights, democratic values, and the promotion of a free press, which are key pillars of its diplomatic agenda.

The Ministry also emphasized Nigeria’s endorsement of the two West African nations—Benin and Gambia—that have secured seats on the Council. This move demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to regional collaboration in upholding fundamental human rights, both within Africa and globally. The country remains a staunch advocate for the principles of a rules-based international order.

In response to recent media reports, the Ministry clarified that Nigeria did not submit a candidate for membership in the UNHRC during this election cycle.

However, it reaffirmed its full support for the newly elected states and its continued involvement with the Council and other international bodies in the fight to protect inalienable human rights worldwide.

Nigeria’s role in championing human rights remains prominent, as it collaborates with regional and global institutions to ensure the protection of fundamental freedoms
