By Caroline Ameh

The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally accepted an invitation to join BRICS as a partner country, marking a significant step in the nation’s pursuit of international collaboration and economic advancement.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Saturday by Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to him, Nigeria’s participation in BRICS underscores its commitment to fostering global partnerships that align with the country’s economic and developmental objectives.

BRICS, a bloc comprising major emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—offers Nigeria an opportunity to strengthen trade, investment, and socio-economic cooperation with member nations. By engaging with the alliance, Nigeria aims to enhance its strategic interests in key sectors such as trade and investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology, and climate change.

“This partnership aligns with our national aspirations for inclusive growth, regional integration, and active participation in shaping a fair and equitable global economic order,” the ministry stated.

Nigeria looks forward to constructive engagement with BRICS members, driving innovation and fostering stronger people-to-people exchanges while maintaining its stance on strategic autonomy and sustainable development.
