Nigeria Pledges to Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Kuwait.

By Caroline Ameh

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening bilateral trade and investment relations with Kuwait, as Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, embarks on a strategic working visit to the Gulf nation.

The visit, scheduled from February 5 to 8, marks the first time a Nigerian foreign minister has visited Kuwait since diplomatic relations were established on January 31, 1970. According to a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, the trip aims to bolster economic, trade, and agricultural cooperation between the two nations.

During the visit, Tuggar will engage in high-level discussions with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Amb. Abdullah Al-Yahya, and oversee the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize agreements on mutual cooperation. He is also expected to hold talks with Sheikh Ahmed Al-Sabah, Prime Minister of Kuwait, and pay a courtesy visit to Sheikh Mishal Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait.

The anticipated agreements include the establishment of a joint commission for mutual cooperation, a framework for diplomatic consultations, and collaborations in economic development, science and technology, and capacity building.

Additionally, the minister will meet with Kuwait’s Minister of Petroleum, Tariq Al-Roumi, and Waleed Al-Bahar, Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED). A business luncheon with leading Kuwaiti investors and business figures is also on the agenda, aimed at fostering investment opportunities.

“The visit is expected to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and investment ties between Nigeria and Kuwait, opening new avenues for cooperation across multiple sectors,” Tuggar stated.

This diplomatic engagement is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to enhance international partnerships and attract foreign investment to drive economic growth.
