By Caroline Ameh

The Indian police authorities have apprehended a key suspect in the murder of a 35-year-old Nigerian , Joseph, also known as Chindiniju Amechi Wilson, in Nalasopara, Mumbai, four years ago. The suspect, identified as Kancha, aged 28, had been living in the same town under a false identity, raising concerns about his involvement in the heinous crime.

As reported by the Times of India, Kancha’s arrest, which took place on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, brings fresh hope for justice in this long-pending case. Kancha was known by various aliases, including Roshan Bechain Mandal and Ashfaq Mohammad Sheikh, and had successfully concealed his true identity for an extended period.

This development increases the number of individuals in custody in connection with the murder to two, while two other suspects remain at large. The case had triggered outrage within the Nigerian community in the area back in October 2019, resulting in protests, damage to parked vehicles, and calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

The investigation into Joseph’s murder led to the identification of four men suspected of involvement in the crime. Nasir Khan was one of the individuals arrested earlier in connection with the case, and a charge sheet was subsequently filed against him in court, according to an official from the Vasai crime branch (unit II).

It was a tip-off that ultimately led the police to Kancha, who had apparently relocated to Bengaluru six months after the crime and assumed a new identity. He was found residing in Nalasopara under the name Ashfaq Sheikh, with altered physical features. Police authorities have determined that the murder was linked to a drug deal.
