By Caroline Ameh

Queensland Labor MP Brittany Lauga has come forward with shocking allegations of being drugged and sexually assaulted in the central Queensland town of Yeppoon over the past weekend. Lauga, who holds the portfolio of assistant minister for health and regional health infrastructure, reported the incident to authorities on Sunday, April 28.

In a statement shared on social media on Friday, Lauga disclosed her visit to the Yeppoon police station and hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning following the alleged assault.

Medical tests conducted at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in her system, which she claims she did not voluntarily ingest.

The 37-year-old MP asserted that the substance significantly impacted her and emphasized the commencement of a police investigation into the matter.

Disturbingly, Lauga revealed that since the incident, she has been contacted by other women who suspect they may have also been drugged in Yeppoon on the same night.

Expressing concern for the safety of women in the community, she called for an end to such occurrences, stressing that socializing should not entail the risk of being drugged or assaulted.

A circulating online video, purported to capture the assault from across the street, further compounds the gravity of the situation. Lauga became aware of its existence shortly after reporting the incident to the authorities.

Lauga has opted for privacy as she focuses on her physical and emotional recovery, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received.

She urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the investigation.

Queensland Police have confirmed the commencement of investigations into the alleged sexual assault in Yeppoon, indicating that inquiries are ongoing.

Premier Steven Miles reiterated the government’s support for Lauga, condemning the ordeal she has endured. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing Lauga’s wellbeing and pledged the government’s assistance in whatever capacity necessary.

Brittany Lauga, a seasoned town planner, has served in parliament for nearly a decade, having been first elected to the seat of Keppel in 2015.
