Renowned British actor Ian Gelder, famous for portraying Kevan Lannister in the hit series “Game of Thrones,” has passed away at the age of 74, as confirmed by his husband and fellow actor Ben Daniels on Tuesday.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on Wednesday, Daniels announced the sad news, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of his beloved husband and life partner. Gelder had been battling bile duct cancer since December, prompting Daniels to halt his work commitments to care for him. Despite their hopes for a longer battle, Gelder’s passing came unexpectedly swift.

Describing Gelder as the epitome of kindness, generosity, and love, Daniels paid tribute to his partner of 30 years, whom he fondly referred to as his “rock.”

Gelder’s illustrious career spanned decades, with notable appearances in television shows such as “Torchwood,” “His Dark Materials,” and “Doctor Who.” However, it was his portrayal of Kevan Lannister in “Game of Thrones” that propelled him to international acclaim. Playing the trusted adviser to the formidable Lord Tywin Lannister, Gelder featured prominently in four of the show’s eight seasons.

Beyond the screen, Gelder was a distinguished stage actor, gracing the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) with memorable performances, including Antonio in “The Merchant of Venice” and the Duke of Clarence in “Richard III.”

News of Gelder’s passing reverberated throughout the entertainment industry, eliciting heartfelt tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Richard E Grant, known for his role in “Withnail & I,” expressed his condolences to Daniels, acknowledging the immense loss of his beloved Ian. The RSC fondly remembered Gelder as one of the kindest and gentlest individuals in the profession, while “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies reflected on the passing of a delightful and funny actor.
