South Africa’s Election: Court Rejects ANC’s Attempt to De-Register Zuma-Backed MK Party.
By Caroline Ameh
South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC), is facing a significant legal setback as the country’s election court has dismissed the ANC’s bid to prevent a newly established political entity, the uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, from participating in the upcoming general elections slated for May.
The MK party, bearing the name of the former armed wing of the ANC, has garnered notable support from former President Jacob Zuma, who has been suspended by the ANC. This development has raised concerns within the ANC regarding potential repercussions on its electoral performance.
Despite the ANC’s contention that the MK party failed to meet the requisite registration criteria, the electoral court ruled in favor of allowing the party’s participation in the electoral process.
In addition to legal challenges, the ANC has initiated separate proceedings against the MK party, alleging copyright infringement.
Amidst mounting speculation fueled by opinion polls suggesting a possible decline in the ANC’s vote share below 50% – a historic first in three decades – Zuma’s endorsement of the MK party has gained traction, particularly in his native province of KwaZulu-Natal.
While Zuma did not found the MK party, his vocal support since December has led to his suspension from the ANC, marking a significant rift within the party ranks.
Zuma’s association with the ANC’s MK, formed during the anti-apartheid struggle, contrasts with his subsequent tenure as South Africa’s president, marred by corruption allegations and his eventual ousting in favor of incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The ANC has condemned Zuma’s backing of the MK party, accusing him of exploiting military symbolism for opportunistic gains and undermining the party’s historical legacy. Furthermore, the ANC contends that the MK party’s emergence seeks to undermine its support base.
