In a sad turn of events, six enthusiastic Guinean football fans lost their lives while celebrating their nation’s triumphant win in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast. The celebratory atmosphere quickly turned somber as the nation mourns the tragic incident.
Guinea secured a 1-0 victory against The Gambia during their second group game on Friday night, propelling them closer to the knockout rounds. However, the joyous celebrations that erupted across the West African nation took a devastating toll.
The Guinean Football Federation, Feguifoot, confirmed the unfortunate incident to the BBC. Amadou Makadji, the media manager for Feguifoot, emphasized the need for measured celebrations, urging fans to prioritize their safety.
Speaking to BBC Africa Sport, Makadji stated, “What is important is that our fans and the public celebrate in a very measured fashion. They have to be very careful not to put themselves in danger because football aims to bring joy and not leave families bereaved. We do not want deaths to mourn, so we call on everyone to celebrate but to take care of themselves so that nothing happens to them.”
As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, the focus shifts from jubilation to ensuring the safety of football enthusiasts during celebratory moments.
