At least 22 persons have lost their lives in a devastating blaze that engulfed a games arcade in India, as confirmed by local officials on Saturday.
Reports indicate that among the victims are several children.
The inferno, described as “massive” by witnesses, erupted at the arcade located in Rajkot, situated in the western state of Gujarat.
Eyewitnesses observed flames billowing high into the sky, accompanied by a dense pall of smoke, as the fire quickly spread throughout the building.
Efforts to bring the fire under control were eventually successful, although not before claiming numerous lives. A search and rescue operation has been initiated amid concerns that additional victims, potentially including children, could be trapped beneath the rubble.
Local law enforcement authorities have faced challenges in identifying the charred remains of the victims due to the severity of the burns.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, prompting Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to announce the deployment of a “special investigation team” to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Expressing profound sorrow over the incident, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi conveyed his distress and extended his sympathies to those who have lost loved ones in the Rajkot fire.
