U.S. Treasury and Trade Officials to Meet Chinese Counterparts in Switzerland Amid Trade War Tensions.

By Caroline Ameh

Senior U.S. officials are set to meet with Chinese counterparts in Switzerland later this week in a significant development that could mark the beginning of new trade negotiations between the world’s two largest economies.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will travel to Switzerland on Thursday, where they are scheduled to hold talks with Swiss President Karin Ketter-Sutter and key Chinese officials. The meetings are expected to focus on easing tensions stemming from tariffs imposed during former President Donald Trump’s administration.

In a statement released Tuesday, Bessent’s office confirmed that he will discuss trade relations with both the Swiss leadership and “the lead representative on economic matters from the People’s Republic of China.”

Greer’s office issued a similar statement, noting he will “discuss negotiations about reciprocal trade” with Swiss officials and “meet with his counterpart from the People’s Republic of China to discuss trade matters.”

While the Chinese delegation’s specific members have not been officially named, Vice Premier He Lifeng—widely regarded as China’s top economic policymaker and chief trade negotiator—is expected to participate.

The meetings come as global markets closely watch for signs of progress in resolving the prolonged trade conflict, which has impacted supply chains and business relations worldwide.
