US Vice President Harris Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Criticises Israel’s Response.

By Caroline Ameh

United States Vice President Kamala Harris has issued a call for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza, marking a departure from the usual stance of the US administration towards Israel.

During a speech in Selma, Alabama, commemorating the anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” Harris condemned the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and demanded immediate action to address it.

Harris stressed the need for Israel to ramp up aid delivery to Palestinians in Gaza, asserting that there are “no excuses” for not doing so. She called for the opening of new border crossings and urged Israel to refrain from imposing unnecessary restrictions on humanitarian assistance.

Her remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions in Gaza, with a recent incident resulting in the deaths of over 100 Palestinians who were attempting to access food aid in Gaza City. Harris extended condolences to the victims and called on Hamas to accept a ceasefire deal that has reportedly garnered broad acceptance from Israel.

Criticism of Israel’s handling of the Gaza conflict has been mounting within the Democratic Party, particularly as President Joe Biden faces pressure from voters, especially in key battleground states like Michigan.

The Democratic primary in Michigan saw a significant number of voters expressing dissatisfaction with Biden’s stance on Gaza, signaling potential challenges for the President in the upcoming election.
