Nigeria Reacts to U.S. Visa Restriction Policy, Calls for Reconsideration.

By Caroline Ameh

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed concern over the recent decision by the United States of America’s Government to revise its visa reciprocity schedule for Nigerian citizens, reducing the validity of certain non-immigrant visa categories to three months with single entry.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government noted that the new U.S. visa policy affects B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) visa categories.

The statement described the development as a departure from the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that have long defined bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States.

“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries,” the statement read.

Nigeria expressed particular worry that the visa restriction would place undue hardship on its citizens — including students pursuing academic opportunities, professionals conducting legitimate business, families visiting loved ones, and individuals contributing to educational and cultural exchanges.

While acknowledging the right of sovereign nations to set their immigration policies, Nigeria urged the United States to reconsider the move “in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that diplomatic engagements are ongoing and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to seeking a fair resolution that reflects mutual respect and national interest.
