The Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and Director of the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, Mr. Yang Jianxing, has underscored fashion as a powerful tool for cultural exchange, economic growth, mutual understanding fostering friendships .
Speaking in Abuja at the 2026 China-Nigeria Fashion Show, Mr Jianxing said the fashion show connects the cultures and creativity of China and Nigeria, and establishes a platform for dialogue between Chinese and Nigerian clothing cultures, allowing Chinese aesthetics and indigenous African art to interact and blend.
According to Mr Jianxing, clothing is more than just attire, but a vibrant vehicle for civilisation and a universal cultural language that transcends geography.
“Today, we are not merely watching a fashion show that combines cultural depth with artistic beauty; we are witnessing a profound dialogue on the runway between two ancient yet dynamic civilizations. Chinese clothing boasts a long history and diverse styles.
“Nigerian clothing culture is rich and colorful, reflecting the unique characteristics of its diverse ethnic groups and regions. Different ethnic groups possess distinctive styles of clothing, fabrics, colors, and headwear. At the same time, the exchange of clothing elements across different regions has given rise to a vibrant, modern Nigerian fashion scene.
“Through every stitch and thread, it carries forward and deepens the profound friendship between our two countries, serving as a vivid illustration of the “bond between peoples” shared by China and Nigeria.
Each exquisite garment on display embodies a shared vision: that multicultural exchange does not create barriers but rather fosters inclusive, forward-looking fashion trends, injecting fresh momentum into the fashion industries and creative economies of both nations.
“In 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Civilization Initiative, calling for respect for the diversity of civilizations, the promotion of shared human values, an emphasis on the inheritance and innovation of civilizations, and strengthened international people-to-people exchange and cooperation.
He emphasised the fundamental values of cultural exchange, mutual learning, and coexistence, noting that the fashion show marks a promising beginning, the sharing of designs and industrial collaboration between the two sides which will undoubtedly enhance growth in the fashion sectors of both countries.
Mr. Jianxing said they will continue to expand channels for people-to-people exchange, deepen practical cooperation across various sectors, and celebrate the profound friendship between China, Africa, and Nigeria. He also said that they aim to empower the robust growth of their cultural industries and work hand-in-hand to build a closer China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.
The Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hajia Hanatu Musawa, who was represented, said the Ministry remains committed to promoting Nigeria’s creative industry, and creating platforms that enable Nigeria’s creative target to connect with international partners and audiences.

“Today’s celebration is not only in recognition of China’s new cultural heritage, but also
in recognition of the growing fashion industry and the romantic ties between Nigeria and
China. Fashion remains a powerful tool for cultural exchange, economic growth, and mutual cultural understanding and motivations. It bridges gaps, fosters friendships, and creates
opportunities for shared prosperity. Fashion is more than clothing.
She further stated that fashion is a powerful expression of identity, culture, creativity, and heritage, noting that Nigeria is blessed with a vibrant and diverse fashion industry driven by talented designers, artisans, young creatives, entrepreneurs, and likewise, China has elite cultural element and dynamic creative industry.
She added added that bringing these two creative communities together creates the opportunity for collaboration, knowledge exchange, innovation and economic growth.
The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Chief Executive Officer of Sygnific Stitches and Fabrics, Hajia Binta Muazu, said Nigeria’s culture is one of its greatest assets and fortune, referencing the nation’s textiles, colours, craftsmanship, traditions, which she said are treasures and deserve to be seen and celebrated far beyond the shores of Nigeria.
“Fashion carries them better than almost anything else, because clothing speaks a language that needs no translation. You do not have to share a tongue to recognise beauty when it works for you”, she said.
She said Sygnific Stitches has become a globally recognized African fashion house, carrying the richness of natural creativity to audiences beyond the continent.
