Drone Attack Targets US Military Base In Syria, Killing Kurdish-Led Fighters.

By Caroline Ameh

A drone attack has struck the largest US military base in Syria, resulting in the death of at least six fighters belonging to a Kurdish-led militia force.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), instrumental in the defeat of the Islamic State group in Eastern Syria, disclosed that the one-way unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) originated from Syrian government-controlled territory. The targeted location was the commando academy at the al-Omar oil field in the eastern province.

Initial investigations by the SDF indicate that Iran-backed militias orchestrated this “terrorist act.” The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported seven SDF commandos killed and 18 injured, marking the 108th militia attack on US bases in Syria since mid-October.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iraqi militias supported by Iran, claimed responsibility for the drone attack, stating it was carried out “against the US occupation base in al-Omar oil field.”

This incident follows a previous drone strike on the US Tower 22 base on the Jordanian side of the Syrian border on January 28, resulting in the death of three US soldiers. The US responded with a series of air strikes on facilities linked to Iranian forces and Iran-backed militias in Syria and Iraq.
