FG CONDEMNS ATTEMPTED COUP IN SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the attempted coup d’etat reported in the early hours of Friday, 25th November, 2022 in Sao Tome and Principe. According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, made available to Diplomatic Digest online, on Sunday afternoon, and signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry, Mrs Francisca K. Omayuli, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the democratically elected government of Sao Tome and Principe.
Omayuli called on the people of that country to lend a necessary support to the newly elected government of Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada in its efforts to address the challenges bedeviling the country and leverage on the gains of democracy for the good of its populace.
“The government of Nigeria will continue to support the African Union’s position, upheld by the various Regional Economic Communities Coups d’etat in Africa will not be condoned” the statement added.
Patrice Trovoada had on Friday morning announced an attack on Army Headquarters in an attempted coup d’etat that was foiled. The government also announced the arrest of four men including the former president of the outgoing National Assembly, Delfin Neves and another former military Officer who attempted a coup in 2009.
Since the last attempted military coup in 2003, the west African country had enjoyed relative political stability.
