Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ablakwa Visits Ukraine On Protection of Ghanaian Citizens And Bilateral Cooperation.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) has undertaken an Official Visit to Ukraine on Wednesday, 25th February, 2026. He was received in Kyiv by the President of Ukraine, His Excellency Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Discussions between President Zelenskyy and the Honourable Minister focused on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of two Ghanaian nationals currently being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine.

The Honourable Minister informed of Government of Ghana’s concern for the welfare and safety of its citizens and reiterated Ghana’s expectation that their rights continue to be protected in accordance with international law and established humanitarian conventions. He conveyed the gratitude of the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to his Ukrainian counterpart for the assurances given with regard to the protection of the affected Ghanaian nationals.

President Zelenskyy and the Honourable Minister also examined the growing threat posed by transnational trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable youth across Africa, luring them into dangerous conflict situations under false pretenses. Both sides acknowledged the urgent need for enhanced cooperation to dismantle such networks and strengthen preventive mechanisms through intelligence-sharing and public awareness.

Beyond consular and humanitarian matters, deliberations were held on the need to deepen cooperation in agriculture, defence, education and trade. The two reaffirmed their commitment to expanding diplomatic engagement and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.

President Zelenskyy extended invitation to his Ghanaian counterpart for a visit to Kyiv, as Ukraine seeks to elevate its diplomatic ties with Ghana. The Honourable Minister expressed optimism that ongoing negotiations will yield positive outcomes and reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests and dignity of every Ghanaian citizen.

The visit reflects the Government’s firm resolve that every Ghanaian life matters and that the protection of citizens abroad remains a top foreign policy priority.
