Group Demands Senate’s Quick Passage Of Nigeria’s Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill To Avoid Discrepancies In 2027 Elections.

The Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOT!ON) has warned that delays in passing the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, risk undermining preparations for the 2027 general elections, and maintaining a status quo that excludes many Nigerians from meaningful political participation.

The MOTION in a statement yesterday co-signed by its Convener, Hauwa Mustapha, Co-Conveners, Christopher Isiguzo, and Blessing Alims, Members of the Steering Committee, Dr Otive Igbuzor, and Dr Andrew Mamedu, said decisions affecting the country’s future should be transparent and open to public scrutiny.

The organisation emphasised that even though the House of Representatives had passed its version of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill in December, 2025, the delay by the Senate to pass the Bill, undermines democratic accountability and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

The MOTION therefore called for the immediate passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, demand for transparency and public accountability, protection of inclusive electoral reforms, safeguarding of the 2027 elections, and respect for citizens’ democratic rights

They added that the final bill must strengthen provisions that promote political participation for women, young people, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised groups, and remove barriers to fair competitions.
