Monsoon Floods Claim Seven Lives in Sri Lanka.

Severe flooding and landslides triggered by monsoon rains have resulted in the tragic loss of at least seven lives in Sri Lanka, according to the country’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

In the Sitawaka area, located outside the capital city of Colombo, three members of a single family tragically perished when their home was engulfed by floodwaters.

The devastating impact of the floods has led to widespread disruptions, with electricity supply severed in numerous regions and authorities ordering the closure of schools on Monday.

Warnings of potential landslides have been issued across nine districts, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Pradeep Kodippili, Director of the DMC, emphasized the escalating flood risk in Colombo and other southern regions, noting that some areas have already received over 400mm of rainfall.

Kodippili urged citizens to remain vigilant and heed emergency advisories from the government and DMC as the crisis unfolds. The DMC revealed that 20 out of the country’s 25 districts have been affected by the relentless rains.

In response to the crisis, the military has been mobilized to provide relief efforts. The Air Force has deployed three helicopters and rescue teams to assist in rescue operations, while the Navy has dispatched 10 teams with an additional 116 teams on standby.

Meanwhile, the army is actively distributing food to displaced individuals affected by the calamity.

Sulakshana Jayawardena of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy disclosed that power supplies have been intentionally cut off in certain areas in coordination with the DMC to ensure safety. Plans to restore electricity will be undertaken once the floodwaters recede, Jayawardena assured.

As Sri Lanka grapples with the aftermath of these devastating floods, concerted efforts from authorities and the community are underway to mitigate further loss of life and provide assistance to those affected by the natural disaster.
