The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

In an official statement issued on Monday in Abuja, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the Vatican, the global Catholic community, and the Argentine people.

“The Holy Father was a global moral leader whose papacy was defined by humility, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of peace, social justice, and human dignity,” the statement read.

Nigeria also extended sympathy to its own large Catholic population, recognizing Pope Francis’ profound impact on the country. His dedication to the marginalized—refugees, the poor, and victims of conflict—struck a chord in Nigeria, where his messages of interreligious harmony and solidarity provided hope amid persistent challenges.

The government acknowledged the Pope’s historic 2022 apology for the Church’s role in colonial injustices, praising it as a landmark gesture of reconciliation. It also commended his advocacy for peace in Africa and other conflict regions, describing it as a reflection of his universal mission.

“As the world mourns the loss of this extraordinary pontiff, Nigeria prays for the peaceful repose of his soul and affirms that his legacy of mercy, dialogue, and environmental stewardship will continue to inspire generations,” the statement added.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, served as the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and was widely regarded for his progressive stance on global issues.
