Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between Nigeria and Qatar to advance gas diplomacy and facilitate the transition towards renewable energy sources.
Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this in his lecture at the Doha Diplomatic Institute on the sidelines of President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Qatar, according to a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, spokesman for the ministry.
“Nigeria, with its vast gas reserves of 208 trillion cubic feet, and Qatar, boasting the third-largest gas reserves worldwide, have a unique opportunity to champion gas as a cleaner alternative and a transition fuel,” stated Ambassador Tuggar. “Our partnership can not only benefit our economies but also contribute to the stability of global energy markets.”
Ambassador Tuggar also emphasized Nigeria’s role as a major gas province, with significant LNG infrastructure already in place and ambitious projects, such as the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, underway.
These initiatives present opportunities for Qatar to collaborate with Nigeria in expanding gas markets across Africa and beyond.
“With Qatar’s expertise in international business negotiations and diplomatic mediation, a partnership with Nigeria can pave the way for groundbreaking projects like the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, fostering regional cooperation and stability,” Ambassador Tuggar remarked.
He further underscored the potential for Qatar to act as a neutral investor, promoting reconciliation and fostering a conducive environment for economic growth and development in the region.
The lecture concluded with optimism about the prospects of enhanced cooperation between Nigeria and Qatar, not only in the energy sector but also in promoting mutual understanding and diplomatic initiatives in the region.
