Nigeria Reaffirms Adherence To Bilateral Ties With Russia.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has underscored the enduring diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Russia, dating back to December 25, 1960. During his recent working visit to Russia on March 6, 2024, the Minister emphasized the Nigerian government’s commitment to strengthening these bilateral ties.

Speaking after a meeting with Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Ambassador Tuggar highlighted the mutual support both nations have provided each other in various international forums, including the United Nations specialized agencies.

Ambassador Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s recognition of Russia as a vital ally and strategic partner, particularly in the fight against terrorism. He expressed gratitude for Russia’s support and solidarity with the Nigerian government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister also disclosed Nigeria’s aspirations to join BRICS and become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, aiming to ensure Africa’s representation in global decision-making processes.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ambassador Tuggar voiced Nigeria’s support for a peaceful resolution, noting the impact of the conflict on global grain exports, in which both countries are significant players.

He highlighted the importance of the Joint Commission between Nigeria and Russia, established to implement bilateral agreements, and expressed Nigeria’s determination to strengthen economic, cultural, and political ties.

Ambassador Tuggar praised Russia’s commitment to projects in Nigeria, including the financing and execution of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and the Aluminium Smelting Company by AC Rusal. He also mentioned ongoing cooperation in the development of nuclear power plants and renewable energy.

On military cooperation, the Minister acknowledged the longstanding ties between Russia and Nigeria, dating back to the Soviet era. He appreciated Russia’s assistance in intelligence sharing, which has aided Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency.

Furthermore, Ambassador Tuggar recognized Russia’s support for Nigerian students through scholarships, highlighting the significant contributions to Nigeria’s education sector.

In conclusion, Ambassador Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a robust partnership with Russia for the mutual benefit of both nations.
