Priyanka Gandhi Set to Make Electoral Debut in Wayanad.
By Caroline Ameh
After years of campaigning for the Congress party, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, sister of Rahul Gandhi, announced on Tuesday that she is set to enter electoral politics by contesting her first election in Wayanad, Kerala.
This move comes as Rahul Gandhi prepares to relinquish the Wayanad seat, following his recent election victories in both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.
Priyanka Gandhi, 52, belongs to India’s renowned Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, and her electoral debut is highly anticipated among her supporters. She expressed confidence and excitement about representing Wayanad, emphasizing her commitment to filling the void left by her brother.
“I am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad, and I will not let them feel his [Rahul Gandhi’s] absence,” Priyanka Gandhi stated confidently. “I will work hard and I will try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative.”
The election date for the by-election has yet to be announced. Priyanka Gandhi, despite the significance of the moment, has conveyed she feels no nervousness about the upcoming electoral challenge.
Priyanka’s mother, Sonia Gandhi, former president of the Congress party, currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s parliament. With Rahul Gandhi’s decision to focus on Rae Bareli, Priyanka Gandhi’s potential win would mean all three Gandhi family members would hold seats in the Indian parliament simultaneously.
Critics have pointed to the dominance of the Nehru-Gandhi family in Congress politics as emblematic of dynastic politics in India. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the move, describing Congress as “a family business.”
However, supporters and party insiders have praised Priyanka Gandhi’s political acumen and her effective campaign strategies. She officially entered politics in 2019 when she was appointed as the Congress party’s general secretary and has since been instrumental in managing various state election campaigns.
Priyanka Gandhi has been active in Congress politics for decades, having previously campaigned for her mother and brother. Her resemblance to her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has often drawn comparisons and speculation about her political potential.
The announcement of Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy has sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Annie Raja, a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) who contested against Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad, welcomed the prospect of more women in parliament but did not confirm whether she would run against Priyanka Gandhi in the upcoming by-election.
In response to news of Priyanka Gandhi’s electoral debut, senior BJP figures have renewed calls for an end to what they call “dynastic politics” within the Indian political landscape.
As Priyanka Gandhi prepares to embark on this new phase of her political career, all eyes will be on Wayanad to see if she can secure a victory and continue the Nehru-Gandhi legacy in Indian politics.
