A British national, Ramandeep Kaur Mann, has been sentenced to death by hanging in India for the murder of her husband, Sukhjeet Singh. The court’s verdict comes after a harrowing case that unfolded in Shahjahanpur.
The court in India heard that Kaur Mann, driven by a sinister plot to inherit £2 million from her husband’s life insurance, poisoned her own family before ruthlessly slitting her husband’s throat on September 2, 2016. Her accomplice, Gurpreet Singh, has been sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the heinous crime.
The prosecution’s case relied heavily on the eyewitness testimony of the victim’s nine-year-old son, a crucial factor in securing a conviction against Kaur Mann. It’s worth noting that the convicted woman is a British national.
The gruesome incident occurred when Kaur Mann returned from a month-long family holiday to her husband’s hometown. She meticulously executed her plan, which began with poisoning a meal intended for several family members. Fortunately, her eldest son did not consume the tainted food.
Tragedy struck on the morning of September 2, 2016, when Sukhjeet Singh’s lifeless body was discovered on the first floor of the house where he had been sleeping with his family. Sukhjeet’s mother, Vansh Kaur, was asleep on the ground floor at the time.
Murder charges were swiftly brought against Kaur Mann and Gurpreet Singh. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that the two perpetrators were in a relationship, adding a disturbing layer to the case.
The court found both individuals guilty of murder and the offense of criminal acts carried out by several persons in furtherance of common intention. The judge presiding over the case described it as “the rarest of rare,” noting that the tragedy had not only claimed Sukhjeet’s life but also robbed an elderly widow of her remaining years, shattered the childhood and youth of two minor children, and left a lasting scar of lost happiness in their lives.
Reacting to the verdict, Sukhjeet’s mother expressed her relief, stating, “I feel relieved. My prayers were answered, and I got what I was expecting from the court. I was demanding capital punishment for Ramandeep so that no mother’s child dies like this.”
