By Caroline Ameh

The Canadian Embassy in Abuja was engulfed in flames, resulting in the feared loss of two lives and leaving another critically injured. The catastrophe occurred during maintenance work on the embassy’s power generating plant, and eyewitnesses describe a scene of chaos and desperation.

The fateful event transpired as the embassy’s technical crew was conducting repairs on the power generator. Regrettably, the fire that erupted claimed the lives of two individuals, while one person sustained grave injuries. Another individual narrowly escaped the blaze by clambering onto the roof of the power house.

Reports indicate that the victims were part of the team responsible for the generator’s maintenance. The force of a sudden explosion from the generator ejected them from the powerhouse, leading to the tragic loss of life.

As the fire broke out at approximately 12 pm, embassy staff, gripped by fear, quickly evacuated the premises. Responding to the emergency, firefighting trucks rushed to the scene to combat the raging inferno. Within the embassy compound, personnel sought refuge under trees and other secure areas, while an ambulance arrived to transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Amiola Adebayo, the Head of Operations of the FCT Fire Service, confirmed the devastating incident and reported that some victims had been urgently transported to the hospital for medical care. However, the cause of the fire and the nationalities of the affected individuals remain undisclosed at this time.

At the time of this report, the Embassy of Canada had not issued an official statement regarding the tragic incident. An ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the circumstances and causes behind the fire, shedding light on the events that led to this heartbreaking loss of life.
