Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Damptey Bediako Asare has urged Ghanaians who wish to travel to Kenya to exercise caution.
Kenyan youths and opposition launched a campaign tagged “7 days of Rage” taking to the streets to oppose a controversial finance bill that proposes new tax hikes.
Sequel to the African Continental Trade Area (AfCFTA) Initiative, an agreement signed by both Ghana and Kenya, there has been an increase in travel to Kenya by Ghanaians for business and tourism.
Ambassador Asare who was on Joy News’ Africa Connect said “Concerning Ghanaians travelling to Kenya, either for tourism or business or any other purpose, at this stage, with what is happening, we can only advise that you stay informed. If you are already in the country, our advice is that you keep updated with the latest news, particularly from local news outlets and international news platforms. If you are still in Kenya, it may be advisable you avoid protest areas”.
“Those planning to travel to Kenya in the coming days should contact their travel agents or Airlines for guidance and advice” he added.
Some members of Ghana Parliament were trapped in the ongoing protest who were in Kenya’s Parliament when the protests turned violent. All of whom had to be quickly moved to safety.
“There is no unfortunate incident involving any Ghanaian or any member of the Ghanaian Community so far, and no casualties among the Ghanaian Community” Asure noted.
