By Caroline Ameh

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will travel to Accra, Ghana, on Monday, January 6, to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect John Dramani Mahama, scheduled for January 7, 2025.

Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017, was reelected in December 2024. He will succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been in office since 2017.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu’s visit is in response to an invitation from Mahama, who paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian leader in December.

The statement highlighted the longstanding personal relationship between President Tinubu and Mahama, as well as the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana. The two West African nations have maintained close diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties for decades.

As the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join other African leaders at the swearing-in ceremony, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to regional cooperation and stability.

Accompanying the President on this trip will be the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, along with other senior government officials.

The inauguration ceremony is expected to reinforce Ghana’s democratic tradition and further strengthen ties between ECOWAS member states.
